Wisdom Teeth Removal
San Antonio and Pleasanton, TX

Your wisdom teeth are the last four to erupt. They usually emerge in your late teens or early 20s, which is how they got their name. They are also the most likely to cause problems. Moreover, when your wisdom teeth cause issues, the only way to deal with them is by removing them. At Aesthetic Periodontal and Implant Specialists, we can perform your wisdom tooth removal, and alleviate the pain and discomfort with them.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?

For some people, wisdom teeth emerge just like any other tooth. There is minor discomfort, but it disappears when the tooth breaks through the gums. However, for many people, wisdom teeth cause serious complications. The biggest issue associated with wisdom teeth is impaction. When your wisdom teeth are impacted, it simply means that they cannot erupt fully through the gums, if at all. Impacted wisdom teeth may be blocked, or they may be growing in at an angle. Moreover, when your wisdom teeth are impacted, they can cause a series of complications:
•  Overcrowding. If there is not enough room in your jaw to fit the third set of molars, your wisdom teeth can push up against your established teeth, forcing them out of their position, causing overcrowding.
•  Damaged teeth. If your wisdom teeth are growing in at an angle, they can grow into adjacent teeth. As they continue to grow, they can cause cracks and other damaged to the teeth near them.
•  Cysts. Cysts are fluid filled sacs that can develop in the jawbone as a result of impacted teeth. If they are not addressed, they continue to grow, damaging jawbone and the surrounding teeth.
•  Pericoronitis. If your wisdom teeth only partially emerge, food and bacteria can become trapped. These spaces are particularly hard to clean, so pericoronitis, or a localized infection, develops.

Diagnosing the Problem

When you are experiencing pain in the back of your mouth, and it is interfering with your daily life, calling our office is important. We can officially diagnose your wisdom tooth issue. To do this, we perform a thorough oral exam as well as take x-rays. With digital x-rays, we can see what is happening below your gum line, including in your jawbone. They provide us with a clear picture that will better help us to develop a personalized treatment plan.

Removing Your Wisdom Teeth

After we diagnose your wisdom tooth issues, we will move ahead with the extraction. Extractions are done in one of two ways. The first is a simple extraction. If your tooth has emerged through the gums, we may be able to grip the tooth with forceps and wiggle it back and forth, widening the socket, when the socket is wide enough, the tooth can be lifted out.

With most wisdom teeth, a surgical extraction is needed. For this procedure, we make incisions in your gums, exposing the impacted tooth. From here, we can remove any bone that is in the way and then removes the tooth. In some cases, we may need to break the tooth to make the extraction easier. When finished, we clean the space and stitch the wounds closed. You will then be able to go home to rest and recover.

If you are experiencing pain in the back of your jaw, and suspect your wisdom teeth are to blame, call Aesthetic Periodontal and Implant Specialists to schedule your consultation today.
