Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)After an oral surgery procedure, healing properly is essential. Your body contains plasma in the bloodstream. Inside the plasma are platelets, which are responsible for helping surgical wounds to heal. The faster you can heal, the less likely you are to experience infections or other complications. At Aesthetic Periodontal & Implant Specialists, we perform a procedure to concentrate the platelets in your blood, creating a substance known as platelet-rich plasma, which helps to greatly speed up the recovery process following an oral procedure. What are Platelets?Platelets are essential for wound healing. They are found in the plasma, which is a byproduct in your blood. Platelets help to form clots, which stop bleeding. They also contain the growth hormones that stimulate tissue growth, which allows the body to begin to repair itself. The higher the concentration of platelets, the more tissue that can be stimulated, and the faster the repairs can occur. How Platelet-rich plasma is collectedPlatelet-rich plasma (PRP) can be created the same day as your procedure and will be ready as soon as your procedure is finished. There is no need to schedule a second appointment before the day of your procedure. As soon as you are seated in the dentist’s chair, we draw a very small sample of blood (we don’t need anything more than 2 ounces). We place the collected sample into a small centrifuge, which spins at high speed to separate the plasma from the red blood cells. We collect the plasma and place it back in the centrifuge to spin once more, concentrating the platelets. As soon as your procedure is done, we smear a thick layer over the surgical sites, allowing the healing to start immediately. How Platelet Rich Plasma Is Used
