How Your Gums Change as You Get Older

While some changes are perfectly normal, others can be a sign of gum disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Understanding how your gums change as you age can help you maintain good oral health and keep your smile healthy for years to come.

What Happens to Your Gums as You Age?

As you get older, several changes can occur to your gums:

•  Receding gums: This is the most common change, and it simply refers to the gums pulling away from the teeth, exposing the root surface. This can make your teeth look longer and can increase sensitivity to hot and cold.
•  Gum recession caused by gum disease: This is different from the normal receding that occurs with age. It is caused by bacteria buildup and inflammation, which can damage the gums and bone that support your teeth.
•  Gum sensitivity: Your gums may become more sensitive as you age, making them more prone to bleeding during brushing and flossing.
•  Dry mouth: This is a common side effect of aging and certain medications. Dry mouth can make it difficult to keep your mouth clean, which can increase your risk of gum disease.
•  Changes in medication: Some medications can affect your oral health, including causing dry mouth or increasing your risk of gum disease.

How to Keep Your Gums Healthy as You Age

Fortunately, there are several things you can do to keep your gums healthy as you age:

•  Brush and floss regularly: This is the best way to remove plaque and bacteria buildup, which can cause gum disease. Be sure to brush twice a day and floss once a day.
•  Use a soft-bristled toothbrush: This will help to prevent gum irritation and recession.
•  See your dentist regularly: Getting regular dental checkups and cleanings is essential for maintaining good oral health. Your dentist can identify and treat any early signs of gum disease.
•  Quit smoking: Smoking is a major risk factor for gum disease. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your oral health.
•  Eat a healthy diet: Eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help to keep your gums healthy.
•  Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated is important for overall health, including oral health.

Conclusion

While some changes to your gums are normal as you age, others can be a sign of gum disease. By understanding how your gums change and taking steps to keep them healthy, you can maintain a healthy smile for years to come.

If you have any concerns about your gum health, be sure to see your dentist. They can assess your individual needs and recommend the best course of treatment for you.
