Soft Tissue Graft

Close up of woman smilingYou have probably heard someone say that your teeth are meant to last a lifetime—and that’s true! With the proper care, they can last a very long time.

That doesn’t mean that you will never need some help in the area, however, should problems arise. The fact of the matter is that sometimes things happen to our teeth and gums that we cannot treat on our own.

Gum recession, for example, is an incredibly common problem that many patients end up facing at some point in their lives. In order to combat the issue and ensure that your teeth remain healthy and strong, you should contact us at Aesthetic Periodontal & Implant Specialists for help and advice regarding soft tissue grafts and how they can help.

What is gum recession?

Gum recession occurs when the gums surrounding your teeth begin to pull away from the tooth or teeth in question and recede. This can eventually end with the roots of your teeth exposed, which is a bad thing when it comes to maintaining healthy and functioning teeth. Leaving your tooth’s root exposed, in fact, will eventually lead to a significant amount of damage, as well as a loss of comfort as you eat or drink anything that is either hot or cold. Temperature sensitivity can create a situation that makes eating or drinking fairly miserable, which can also significantly impact your overall health.

What are soft tissue grafts?

Soft tissue grafts are commonly used to help prevent or treat gum recession. This is a permanent treatment option for your gum recession. This is not a “fix” that will quickly wear off and need to be replaced, like placing a tooth-colored material over the area exposed by gum recession in order to help protect the tooth in question. While this procedure might help in the short term, the fact of the matter is that you will eventually need to have healthy gum tissue surrounding your teeth. Soft tissue grafts take tissue from other areas of your body—the roof of the mouth, for example, is host to a lot of viable tissue once you access it.

What do soft tissue grafts do?

Soft tissue grafts, as mentioned above, take soft tissue from elsewhere on your body. That tissue is then stitched to the area experiencing the gum recession. By connecting the healthy tissue to the tissue that is receding, we can work to reverse the gum recession problem and fix the damage that has been done. Eventually the tissue placed during your soft tissue graft will become a permanent part of your gum line, leaving you with a healthy amount of tissue surrounding your teeth and working to keep them protected.

Are soft tissue grafts a complicated procedure?

Soft tissue grafts are not an overly complicated procedure, and they can often be done fairly quickly. The discomfort you will experience from the procedure should also be manageable and will heal quickly.
